Ginsberg poem howl5/8/2023 ![]() ![]() His mother was known as a supporter of the Communist party and gave way to Allen’s empathy towards mental illnesses such as madness and psychosis. His parents, Louis and Naomi Ginsberg were Jewish members of the 1920s literary counterculture in New York. The poem, Howl became a testament of freedom towards social construct and a society built off of racism and subjugation which influenced many generations of poets and youth cultures to come.Īllen Ginsberg was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1926. Allen Ginsberg first published Howl in 1956, and thought as one of the most influential pieces for later generations, Ginsberg described the process of writing Howl as, “I Thought I wouldn’t write a poem but just write what I wanted to without fear, let my imagination go, open secrecy, and scribble magic lines from my real mind –sum up my life- something I wouldn’t be able to show anybody, write for my own soul’s ear and a few other golden ears.” (Ginsberg) From the quote we can see how open-minded Ginsberg was when writing Howl, he allowed himself to freely reign through his emotions. ![]() ![]() Through its many different stories and perspectives, Howl pierced its way through the hearts of numerous audiences good and bad. Many influential poems have been written throughout the 1950’s in America, but none have taken such a controversial stance such as Allen Ginsberg’s, Howl. ![]()
